A Mappin & Webb Wine Cooler made for the British India Steam Navigation Co (BISN). BISN operated in the Middle East and Far East but mainly the Indian Ocean where they were a significant player. Owned by P&O from 1914 but operating under the original name until the 1970s. Mappin & Webb supplied P&O with a range of silver plate which were known for their durability in the challenging Southern Oceans. A beautiful and historic piece redolent of a more glamorous time. The plate is in very good condition, there are a couple of dents which no doubt have a storm-based causality. I have kept this for years, reluctant to part with its history.
